Service should be defined as contributions beyond the student’s course of academic study/research and not expected as part of any existing paid appointments.

Award

Up to 8 students will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship and will be featured on our website at https://grad.wisc.edu/diversity/graduate-student-service-scholarships/

Eligibility

Currently enrolled PhD and master’s degree students at UW-Madison who are making satisfactory progress towards their degrees are eligible to be nominated. Priority will be given to students who conduct multiple service activities and/or whose service activity is notably impactful, in addition to their academic and research excellence. Considerations include the number of hours worked, evidence of the service provided, such as reports/hiring concluded, and description of the impact of the service.

Who can nominate

Any staff or faculty member at UW-Madison. Students cannot nominate themselves, but they can provide information and supporting documents to their nominator.

Nomination materials

To nominate a student, you will be asked 3 essay questions about the student's unpaid service:

  1. What type(s) of unpaid service did the nominee perform for the university?
  2. Please describe the impact of the student's unpaid service to the university.
  3. Why was student's service particularly notable?

You will also be asked to provide an estimate of the total hours of unpaid service the student provided to the university over the academic year.

No letters of recommendation will be accepted, but, optionally, you may upload any supporting documentation of the student's service, such as project deliverables.

Review Committee

A review committee consists of faculty, staff, and graduate students will review the nominations every year to select the winners. Multiple winners will be selected each year based on fund availability.
