UW-Madison Nomination period: March 11, 2025 - April 9, 2025
The Graduate School is invited to nominate up to four of our recent and upcoming STEM PhD graduates to be Schmidt Science Fellows (see www.schmidtsciencefellows.org). This program has the goal of developing the next generation of science leaders to transcend disciplines, advance discovery, and solve the world's most pressing problems.
Schmidt Futures, in partnership with the Rhodes Trust, seeks candidates who combine scientific curiosity with extraordinary academic achievement. They should have demonstrated a collaborative spirit, have the ambition to make a lasting impact in science and in society, and must have a keen interest in undertaking an interdisciplinary research pivot during a postdoctoral placement.
In order to be eligible for nomination to the Schmidt Science Fellows application process, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Studying for a PhD in natural sciences (Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences and Physics), Engineering, Mathematics, Computing – or any of the sub-disciplines, at one of our nominating partner institutions. Individuals on clinical track MD-PhD or Veterinary-PhD programs are not eligible.
- Expected to complete all requirements for the conferral of their PhD between May 15, 2025, and June 30, 2026.
- Able to start their Fellowship in July 2026 or October 2026, available from April 2026 to July 2027 to attend virtual onboarding activities, and from October 2026 to attend in-person convenings.
- Be nominated by a designated senior official from a nominating partner institution.
We invite programs in the relevant fields to nominate no more than one student or recent alumnus/alumna. Nominations must be received by midnight on April 9, 2025, and must come from a program rather than individual students or faculty.
As part of the nomination process, each department must designate a faculty member to serve on the review committee. Reviewers are expected to attend two key meetings: the first on April 16 to discuss the review process, and the second on May 6 to select the final candidates. Additional details about these meetings can be found in the application form.
Applicants selected as UW-Madison nominees will be notified by May 8, 2025. Nominees must then provide preliminary information to the Fellows program by May 29, 2025, and a complete application by July 14, 2025. Any questions may be directed to funding@grad.wisc.edu.
